The Diffrent types of wood
Hardwoods are the botanical group of trees that have broad leaves, produce a fruit or nut, and generally go dormant in the winter.
Alder:
Grows in the Pacific Northwest, where it is the most abundant commercial hardwood. Average height is 90 feet and the tree matures in 25 to 40 years, but will begin to deteriorate by 60 to 80 years of age.
Ash:
Grows Throughout the Eastern U.S. White ash trees range in height from 80 to 120 feet with diameter from 2 to 5 feet.
Aspen:
Grows in the Northeast. Average tree height is 40 to 60 feet. The aspen has a short life span: just before reaching full growth, it has a tendency to suffer from decay.
Basswood:
Grows in the Northern and Lake states. Average tree height is 65 feet.
Beech:
Grows in the Eastern U.S. Average tree height is 120 feet.
Birch:
Grows in the Eastern U.S.,and Northern and Lake states. The average tree is 60 to 70 feet in height.
Cherry:
Grows Throughout Midwestern and Eastern U.S. Main commercial areas: Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia and New York. Average tree height is 60 to 80 feet. Cherry trees can live to the extreme ages of 150 to 200 years.
Cottonwood:
Grows in the Eastern U.S. Average tree height is 80 to 100 feet. Cottonwoods have rapid growth throughout their first 40 years, then grow slowly for the many years after. Some have been known to reach 100 feet in height in fifteen years.
Cypress:
Most cypress trees are natives of the South.
Elm:
Grows in the Eastern to Midwest U.S. Average tree height is 40 to 60 feet.
Gum:
Grow throughout the Southeastern U.S. Average tree height is 80 to 120 feet.
Hackberry:
Grow in the Eastern U.S. Average tree height is 130 feet.
Hard Maple:
Grows in the Eastern U.S. Its average height is 130 feet.
Hickory and Pecan:
Grows in the Eastern U.S. Tree height ranges from 60 to 120 feet. Hickories grow slowly and it is not unusual for a tree to take 200 years to mature.
Pacific Coast Maple:
Grows in the Pacific Northwest. Average height is 60 ft.
Poplar:
Grows throughout Eastern U.S. Tree heights can reach 150 feet.
Red Oak:
Grows throughout Eastern U.S. Red oaks grow more abundantly than the white oaks. Average tree height is 60 to 80 feet.
Sassafras:
Grows throughout the Eastern U.S. Height varies with region: southern trees generally grow tallest with average heights of 80 feet.
Soft Maple:
Grows Throughout Eastern U.S., and to a lesser extent on the West Coast (bigleaf maple). Average tree height is 60 to 80 feet.
Sycamore:
Grows Throughout Eastern U.S. Average tree height is 60 to 125 feet with peeling outer bark and a smooth, mottled cream, tan and green inner bark resembling camouflage.
Walnut:
Grows throughout Eastern U.S. Average tree height of 100 to 150 feet.
White Oak:
Grows throughout the Eastern U.S. The trees prefer rich well drained soil, and average height is 60 to 80 feet.
Willow:
Grows in the Middle and Southern states, along the Mississippi River. Average tree height is usually no taller than 30 to 40 feet.
